A sudden Cloudburst over the Sahastradhara area of Dehradun late Monday night unleashed devastating flash floods and landslides, leaving a trail of destruction across Uttarakhand’s capital. The torrential rains caused the Tamsa River to overflow, flooding nearby areas, including the historic Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple.

Several houses, shops, and even parts of the city’s IT Park were submerged as gushing waters swept through residential colonies and marketplaces. Disturbing visuals showed vehicles being washed away and bridges collapsing under the force of swollen streams. The state disaster relief teams, supported by NDRF and SDRF personnel, launched urgent rescue operations to evacuate stranded families from inundated areas.
Authorities confirmed that at least four people have lost their lives, while others remain missing. Evacuation efforts are being hampered by damaged roads and broken communication links. With rivers still in spate, fears of further damage persist.
In view of the crisis, all schools and Anganwadi centres in Dehradun district have been ordered closed for the day. The Indian Meteorological Department has sounded a red alert for Dehradun, Haridwar, and Tehri districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming hours.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who personally visited the affected regions on Tuesday morning, assured that relief and rehabilitation remain the government’s top priority. “Rescue teams are working round-the-clock. We are ensuring immediate assistance to those affected,” he said.
Meanwhile, the administration has urged residents living in low-lying areas and near riverbanks to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions. With weather forecasts predicting more heavy showers, authorities are bracing for possible escalation of the flood situation in the state.
