Gauhati University (GU) has once again made Assam proud, as three of its faculty members have been named in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists List 2025. This marks the second consecutive year that GU professors have earned a place in the prestigious global rankings.

The recognised scholars include:
Prof. Bhupendra Nath Goswami, Professor of Excellence – ranked 22,145 globally.
Prof. Prodeep Phukan, Department of Chemistry – ranked 142,822.
Prof. Bipan Hazarika, Department of Mathematics – ranked 361,120.
Based on citation performance in 2024, their research impact has also been noteworthy. Prof. Goswami secured 18,265, Prof. Hazarika stood at 148,503, while Dr. Ranjit Thakuria, Associate Professor of Chemistry, earned 270,404.
Global Research Recognition
The rankings, compiled annually by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis and his team at Stanford University, use rigorous metrics such as citation counts, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, authorship citation position, and a composite indicator called the c-score.
This year’s list highlights India’s growing research footprint, featuring 6,239 researchers in the single-year category and 3,372 researchers in the career-long category.

A Consistent Presence
This recognition marks the second consecutive year that Gauhati University professors have featured in the Stanford list, further cementing the institution’s role as a hub of impactful research and academic excellence in the region.
