Women’s World Cup Opening Ceremony to Honour Zubeen Garg

Tribute to Zubeen Garg: Women’s World Cup Opening Ceremony to Honour Zubeen Garg

Posted on September 30, 2025

Women’s Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony to Honour Zubeen Garg: The start of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Guwahati will carry a special emotional touch. The opening ceremony on Tuesday has been changed to pay tribute to legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away recently. His sudden death has left Assam and the Northeast in deep sorrow, and the cricket board has decided to honour his memory before the first match.

Tribute to Zubeen: Women’s World Cup Opening Ceremony to Honour Zubeen Garg

A Musical Tribute to the Icon

The programme will begin at 1:45 PM with performances by some of India’s finest singers. Shreya Ghoshal, Angarag Papon Mahanta, Joi Barua, and the Shillong Chamber Choir will sing Zubeen’s evergreen numbers. Shreya will also perform the official Women’s World Cup theme song. The tribute will set the stage for the much-awaited opening match between India and Sri Lanka at 3 PM.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the earlier plan for a colourful, grand celebration with dancers and lights had to be changed. “Because of the mourning period, we decided to make it a simple and solemn programme dedicated to Zubeen,” he explained.

Artists Come Together in Tribute

The performers, too, are showing their respect in their own way. Saikia revealed that Papon will not take any fee, while Joi Barua has donated his amount to an NGO working in Zubeen’s name. “Everyone wanted to do something for him. This is our way of keeping his spirit alive on such a big stage,” he said.

Honouring Women’s Cricket

The opening ceremony will also include a special moment for the sport itself. The BCCI will felicitate all captains of the Indian women’s cricket team since 1975, marking their contribution to the game.

Saikia added that ticket sales have been excellent, with 90% already sold. Despite the match falling during Durga Puja festivities, a full stadium is expected. “Earlier we thought Puja would affect attendance, but now Zubeen’s tribute has united people. It will feel like a festival inside the stadium,” he said.

A Boost for the Future

The BCCI believes the Women’s World Cup will give a big push to women’s cricket in India. With the Women’s Premier League, equal pay for players, and a strong domestic structure, Saikia said many young girls are now inspired to take up the game. “Hosting the World Cup in cities like Guwahati will make families realise that girls too can build a professional career in cricket,” he explained.

Zubeen’s Spirit Lives On

The event will be more than just a cricketing celebration. For fans in Assam and across India, it will be a day when the stadium remembers a voice that touched millions. As cricket takes centre stage, the music of Zubeen Garg will echo once again, making the Women’s World Cup opening a moment of both pride and remembrance.
