Violence Erupts Outside Baksa Jail as Zubeen Garg Death Case Accused Transferred; Police Use Lathi-Charge to Disperse Protesters.

]Tension gripped Assam’s Baksa district on Wednesday after violence broke out outside the newly built district jail during the transfer of five accused linked to the death of singer-composer Zubeen Garg. The situation turned chaotic when protesters hurled stones at police vehicles carrying the accused, prompting security forces to resort to lathi-charge and tear gas to bring the situation under control.
Mob Targets Convoy Carrying Accused
According to officials, the five accused were being shifted to Baksa District Jail following a court order remanding them to judicial custody. However, as the convoy reached near the jail premises, a large mob — many reportedly Zubeen Garg supporters — began shouting slogans demanding justice and pelted stones at the police vehicles.

The sudden attack damaged several vehicles and injured at least half a dozen people, including police personnel. The officers accompanying the convoy were forced to use mild force and fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and ensure the safe entry of the accused into the jail complex.
Security Tightened, Section 144 Imposed
Following the incident, senior police officers camped at the site, and prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were imposed in the Baksa town area to prevent further gatherings. Mobile internet services were reportedly suspended in parts of the district as a precautionary measure.
“Law and order is under control. Those involved in the violence will be identified and arrested,” said a senior police officer stationed outside the jail. Additional forces from neighboring districts have been deployed to maintain peace.
Background: Zubeen Garg’s Death and Ongoing Probe
The transfer of the accused comes amid growing anger and suspicion surrounding the mysterious death of Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons, who passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Assam Police has so far arrested five individuals, including members of Garg’s event management circle and associates. Their transfer to Baksa Jail followed a court’s order for judicial custody after their interrogation period ended.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already announced a judicial inquiry into the incident, assuring that “no one will be spared if found guilty.”
Public Outrage and Emotional Response
Across Assam, protests and candlelight vigils continue to erupt demanding justice for the singer. Wednesday’s unrest at Baksa is seen as a reflection of the people’s growing frustration over the perceived slow pace of investigation.
“Zubeen was not just a singer — he was our emotion. We will not rest until we know the truth,” said a local protester outside the jail before being dispersed by police.

Government Calls for Calm
Appealing for peace, Chief Minister Sarma urged citizens to trust the ongoing investigation. “Violence will not help the cause. Let the law take its course,” he said, adding that the state government remains committed to ensuring a transparent and fair probe.
Meanwhile, security across western Assam remains on high alert as the investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death continues to dominate headlines and public sentiment.
