
Assam bid a tearful farewell to legendary singer Zubeen Garg, who was cremated with full state honours and a 21-gun salute on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old singer passed away on September 19 during a sea outing in Singapore. Following a second post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, his mortal remains were taken to Sarsajai Stadium, where thousands of fans paid their respects, before being moved to the cremation site.


His younger sister Palmi Borthakur performed the last rites, assisted by close family friends Arun Garg and Rahul Gautam Sarma.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute on X and announced a three-day state mourning, suspending all official entertainment events.

Crowds thronged Kamarkuchi village near Guwahati, reflecting the massive outpouring of grief for the singer, remembered for his evergreen hit “Mayabini”.
